The realm of sports is no stranger to the convention of commending people for their outstanding accomplishments. Year after year, winning teams, coaches and players are acknowledged in a wide range of athletic settings; yet, without the lucrative success typical of colleges and professional franchises, high school sports often lack sufficient funding to do so.
Virginia State University improved its record to 6-2 Saturday with an impressive 42-0 victory over visiting Lincoln University. The game was played under glorious weather conditions before an overflow homecoming crowd on the Ettrick campus’ Rogers Stadium natural grass playing field.
Yahkee Johnson and the L.C. Bird Skyhawks are flying high after their win against Clover Hill Friday. Bird was trailing 13-0 at the half and battled back to defeat their previously undefeated district foe by a score of 14-13.
For Domico Phillips, it’s almost like he was born with the ability to move – and to do it fast. From the age of 4, Domico practiced and played football and ran competitively, and now he displays his skills on Friday nights for the Meadowbrook Monarchs, who improved to 3-1 in the Central District last Friday with a win over Colonial Heights, 29-7.
Like so many other sixth graders, Anna Spiers was simply looking for a place to meet friends at her new school when she went out for the cross country team. Almost immediately upon suiting up for the team at Matoaca Middle School, she began to make her mark as a premier cross country and track athlete.
The Chesterfield County/Colonial Heights Crime Solvers program needs the community’s help to identify and find two men who shot a man while attempting to rob him on Friday, Sept. 24, at about 11:20 p.m.
BUNDLE RD 10/19 Suspect/s forced entry to the vacant residence through a rear door. Once inside, suspect/s put holes in the walls in order to steal wire. The HVAC unit was also stolen from outside of the residence.
