PRAC gets deeper look at draft comp plan

The Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission will take a closer look in the coming months at areas of the draft comprehensive plan that deal heavily with parks and recreation.

Cla Meredith speaks at Meadowbrook

Major League baseball player Cla Meredith visited Meadowbrook High School last Tuesday, speaking in the lecture hall to roughly 50 of the school’s male student-athletes. A free-agent for most of the winter, Meredith signed the next day with the Washington Nationals. The team has invited him to spring training, which will be starting in the next few weeks.

Scholarship competition set for Feb. 27

The Chester Lions Club will sponsor its annual Bland Music Scholarship Competition on Sunday, Feb. 27, in the Chester Baptist Church sanctuary, located at 4317 W. School St. The program will begin at 2 p.m. Doors will open at 1 p.m., according to information from the club.

The weather was cold and the day overcast, but the warm spirit of service was burning bright last month when the Matoaca High School Red Cross Club helped several local citizens clear leaves from their yards, according to information from Librarian Alda Moore.

For Sara Fletcher and the Matoaca High School girls’ basketball team, it’s been a season of ups and downs. From being one of the teams at the bottom of the standings, the Warriors have rebounded to win six district games, likely good enough for a No. 5 seed in the coming District Tournament.

Former Globetrotter inspires at FCA rally

Seth Franco could write a book about beating the odds. The first white basketball player in the 60-year history of the great Harlem Globetrotters, Franco can do more than dribble two basketballs at one time. The basketball wizard, a man of strong faith, travels the country sharing his long-shot history and entertaining thousands with his special talents.

A senior, McElroy has elevated her inside presence for the Highlanders this season. Leading the team in rebounds and blocked shots, she has also improved her scoring average to nearly nine points per game. In a recent outing at the Robins Center versus Richmond, McElroy nearly missed a double-double with 19 points and nine rebounds.
