Civil War trust honors battlefield advocate

On Sept. 20, the Civil War Trust, the nation’s largest battlefield preservation organization, recognized Chesterfield County’s George L. Fickett, Jr, as one of the two outstanding advocates for the protection of historic sites with its Chairman’s Awards for Excellence, recognizing the recipients’ “tangible contributions to the love and appreciation of history in their communities that will stretch far beyond our lifetimes,” according to Chairman Henry E. Simpson.

Local resident publishes memoir “Flight of a White Dinosaur”

James “Jim” Edward Harris, Jr. had always wanted to write his memoirs. He had experience as a newspaper reporter for the Farmville Herald and as a public relations officer in the Air Force and felt he had some writing skills.

The art of collecting

If it exists it can be collected. The world is awash with people collecting common items like baseball cards, musical and Star Wars memorabilia to the odd and macabre such as lynching photographs, bones and death masks. But most collections are benign and fun.

Chester pocket park gets a facelift

Last week the corner of Chester and West Hundred roads got a little love. Called Chester Park, the pocket park had become somewhat of an eyesore, and according to members of the Chester Community Association (CCA) it wasn’t a good representation of the community.

ChesterFest draws record crowd

On a perfect September day, a record number of attendees of all ages arrived in the village of Chester for the 11th Annual ChesterFest event provided by the Chester Community Association (CCA).
